Crank It's Top Songs of 2024
2024 was a great year for music: between chart-topping albums and new movie soundtracks, here are the top songs we were cranking this year.
"Sympathy is a knife " by Charli xcx
Between a catchy chorus and a bouncy beat, "Sympathy is a knife" strikes the balance between party and personal. Xcx's lyricism is vulnerable without being overwhelming, and relatable without being cliche. Appearing on her chart-topping album "brat", "Sympathy is a knife" is a masterclass in both songwriting and sonic production.
"Overcompensate" by Twenty One Pilots
The lead single of the alt-rock duo's most recent album, "Clancy", "Overcompensate" is dynamic and high-octane. Featuring drums by Josh Dun and production/lyrics by Tyler Joseph, this song's ability to change keeps listeners interested and engaged, fit for a drive with the windows down or when you need a little energy boost.
"The Black Dog" by Taylor Swift
This list wouldn't be complete without at least one Taylor Swift song. Between wrapping up her historic "Eras Tour" and releasing her eleventh studio album "The Tortured Poets Department", Swift has had an incredibly busy year. "The Black Dog" is a gut-wrenching depiction of closure, oscillating between frustration, regret, and anger.
"Sticky" by Tyler, The Creator (ft. GloRilla, Sexxy Red, & Lil Wayne)
Tyler, The Creator's return to music was highly anticipated, and the Grammy award-winning musician did not disappoint. "Sticky" appears on his most recent album "CHROMAKOPIA", which dropped in late October of this year, and GloRilla, Sexxy Red, and Lil Wayne are just a few of the incredibly talented artists who make an appearance. This song is just fun. It's energetic, brassy and very on brand for the artist.
"Doing Better" by FLETCHER
"Doing Better" is scathing, confident, and honest. Between cataloguing her accomplishments and acknowledging her faults, FLETCHER's songwriting and powerhouse vocals make "Doing Better" incredibly human.
"Wish You Were Dead" by Lola Young
Lola Young is more than just the virality of her hit song "Messy". Blowing up on TikTok earlier this year, the UK-based artist has catapulted to fame at just age 23. The bassline in this song is strong and downright groovy, layering Young's dark and twisted lyrics over a toe-tapping beat.
"burbank house" by tsubi club
Hyperpop and glitchcore-esque, "burbank house" is bubbly and pulsating, incorporating elements of snare and electric guitar over distorted production.
"Supersad" by Suki Waterhouse
Actress and model Suki Waterhouse shows off her pipes in her sophomore album "Memoir of a Sparklemuffin". "Supersad" is an anthem for those who care too much, an upbeat and positive reminder that life is more than just the "Supersad" moments.
"Officially Mine" by Maude Latour
Hypnotic and danceable, Maude Latour's debut album "Sugar Water" released in August of this year. With vocals and production fit for a main character, "Officially Mine" is perfect for fans of EDM and synthpop.
"nice to know you" by lovelytheband
Appearing on the indie pop band's self-titled album, "nice to know you" features powerful storytelling and a driving bassline, layering harmonies and clever lyricism.
