Nathaniel Rateliff Returns to Roots With Reflective Solo Record, "And It’s Still Alright"
Toning down from his soul man persona with The Night Sweats, Nathaniel Rateliff’s And It’s Still Alright is his first solo record since 2017 and showcases the quieter side of the Denver frontman. An album written to process the pain and loss of Rateliff’s dear friend and producer Richard Swift as well as the divorce of his longtime wife, Rateliff sticks to his ambition of authenticity with acoustic recordings and honest songwriting.
And It’s Still Alright is the perfect fashion of depicting Rateliff’s progression as a writer and musician. The third single released prior to the album, “All or Nothing” is something unlike anything Rateliff has released before. With enchanting chord progressions full of jazzy undertones and a lush orchestral arrangement, Rateliff channels the likes of Harry Nillson and Dr. John. A few of the tracks are more traditional, sounding like his previous albums Falling Faster Than You Can Run and In Memory Of Loss. “Kissing Our Friends”, “You Need Me”, and “Time Stands” resembles a somber heartbreak that so many fans adore about Rateliff’s complimentary solo records compared to the boisterous sound of The Night Sweats.
“I think this album is a reminder that we all go through hardship, but regardless of the hardship everything ends up where it’s supposed to. I still continue to live, and I still continue to find joy. I think that’s the theme of the record.”
Wearing his grief and misery on his sleeve, Rateliff progresses through the album in a boxing match of hope and hopelessness. Rateliff is beginning to embark on a massive worldwide tour kicking off on March 3 in Minneapolis and traveling through iconic venues such as: Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium and Colorado’s Red Rocks Amphitheater. The show will be a combination of solo acoustic, full band, and a 4-piece string section accompanying him. Tickets can be found at nathanielrateliff.com
