Southern Halo - Album Review
Southern Halo is a quickly rising country music trio comprised of three sisters: Natalia, Christina and Hannah Morris. The sisters grew up on the Mississippi delta and started playing music very young. They played their first show when the youngest was only nine.
Fast forward a few years, and they have opened for some major acts: Brantley Gilbert, Eric Paslay, Maren Morris, Love and Theft, Tyler Farr, Randy Houser, John Michael Montgomery, Parmalee, Old Dominion, Jamie Lynn Spears, Craig Campbell, Uncle Kracker, Julie Roberts, American Young and B.B. King.
Their sound can be described as pop country with a dash of southern rock and roll. SOUTHERN HALO’s self-titled album was recently released and has seen much success.
What makes this album stand out from the rest is their harmonies are incredibly glued-together. This is actually one of the main things I noticed upon first listen. Each girl in the band has an amazing voice, and from what i can hear, every one of them takes the lead vocal at some point on the album.
One song that really stuck out to me was “Life Rolls On”. It certainly has a very bittersweet feel to it. Right off the bat, the beat is rockin with a steady “4 on the floor pattern” that can get you bobbing your head. The content of the song is very relatable. The premise is that so many things change when you grow older - friends, relationships, and general circumstances we all eventually have to encounter.
“Rewind” is an upbeat, light-hearted, laid-back, catchy song that can cater to a wide range of people. This song ended up on the country radio charts, and for good reason. It was enough to get me to buy it and blast it in my car with the windows down. The youthful tune is enough to make people of all ages feel young again.
“Little White Dress” is a sassy little song speaking about the yearning of wanting to experience life before getting hitched. “First I want a really long kiss from a really hot guy then i want to taste really good wine..” and later, the lyrics sum it up by saying, “But I ain’t ready yet - for the little white dress”.
“Moon Shine” is a cutesy love song co-written with country star Kelsea Ballerini. “Moon shine, don’t wanna see daylight cause the way you’re hitting his blue eyes, making me wanna, keep it going”. It has a pretty straight-forward groove and doesn’t really carry a dynamic like many of their other songs. Still a good song, nonetheless.
Overall, this album is extremely impressive, especially coming from such a young group of sisters. It’s truly incredible. I highly recommend checking it out
